Color Management for Virtual Production - Level 1

Why Take This Course?

As VP and LED Volumes continue to flourish and the use of the technology changes, it is essential to protect the investment in your career.

The options are now opening up in so many areas that require re-training as well as new intake of practitioners which are a vital component for continued growth.

To stay abreast of current trends and market fluctuations, and thus to be best placed to be at the forefront of all new developments, the future for those who invest in the knowledge now will pay career dividends almost immediately.

Color Science is now perhaps the most widely developing and growing area of Virtual Production, opening up a whole host of new employment opportunities such as:

  • Engineering
  • VP Supervisor
  • Volume Control Operators
  • Dailies
  • Onset Correction
  • LED Volume set-up and calibration
  • Industry Color Science roles for Companies
  • Imaging Supervisor

With a varied array of possible roles including colour, this course will open up pathways to roles in Engineering, Color Engineering, Brain Bar roles, VFX Supervisors, and Cinematography.

Understanding the color pipeline will enable a career path to many roles such as Lighting Technician and Gaffer, DIT-like roles onset color through to wall calibration and into Post for VFX shot matching, dailies operators and perhaps leading to grading work, and of course a Color Scientist.

What's Included?

Led by Chief Color Engineer & Scientist Daniel Mulligan, in this course you will be introduced to Color Science and Management for Virtual Production.

Starting with the history of color for context, next you will learn file formats, VFX, and DI/Post workflows to provide the foundations for the way crew now work within Virtual Production, especially in LED Volumes and with ICVFX workflows.

You will learn why processing requirements, screen display quality and color accuracy, and camera sensors are what make today's new environments both challenging and exciting.

Prepare to appreciate and understand color for this new working paradigm.

A 6-week Live/Online, Instructor-Led Course consisting of the following topics:

  • Week 1 Color History: Introduction to color and its history. Learn basic color history and theory, why color is important to Film Production, basic color workflows, and pipelines for context as it relates to ICVFX later in the course.

  • Week 2 - Color Basics: Learning technical color basics: camera de-bayer, demosaicing, file formats, display technologies, and the base principles that underpin color workflows and technology.

  • Week 3 - Color Engineering: Color Pipelines, Processing for LED Volumes, (Brompton, Megapixel processing for LED walls), Color Space, Log v Linear, VFX plates.

  • Week 4 - Color Calibration: Calibration, LED Volumes, and why this is important for setting the volume at its best. This has a strong relationship with HDR/SDR, NITs values for brightness, and chosen color space.

  • Week 5 - Color Onset: ICVFX/Brain Bar/Unreal introduction to OCIO Management and ACES workflows alongside technical LUTs basics, lighting offsets and LED Volume offsets, spectral imbalance basics

  • Week 6 - Review: Cameras and Lenses and their impacts on film production related to LED Volumes. Includes sensors, moire, file sizes, resolution, and how this impacts on the images recorded from the wall.

  • Wrap-Up: Bringing everything together why the entire pipeline is now in front of the camera and a full review of the future and continued development of ICVFX and LED Volume color science.
